Beyond the Power & Control Model:
Understanding Pathological
Love Relationships

Presented by Jennifer Young, LMHC

Based on my book, Women Who Love Psychopaths, this training is designed for domestic violence professionals, clinicians, victim advocates, and law enforcement, this training examines dangerous personality traits, manipulation patterns, and trauma responses that occur in certain abusive relationships and offers tools for supporting survivor safety and long-term recovery.

Training Summary & Learning Objectives

Beyond the Power and Control Model: Understanding Pathological Love Relationships introduces a deeper framework for understanding certain forms of intimate partner violence by examining the role of personality structure, neurological factors, and relational dynamics. While traditional domestic violence models emphasize power and control, this training explores how dangerous personality traits, particularly those associated with Cluster B personality disorders and psychopathy, can shape abusive relationship patterns and limit the potential for behavioral change. Participants will learn how manipulation strategies, relational cycles, and communication patterns emerge from these personality structures and create predictable dynamics within abusive relationships.

The training also explores the psychological and neurological impact on survivors, including the role of cognitive dissonance, trauma bonding, and atypical post-traumatic stress responses. By examining survivor personality traits and resilience factors, participants will gain a framework for understanding why survivors may remain in these relationships and how clinicians and advocates can support recovery and long-term separation from abusive partners. The course integrates current research on personality, neuroscience, and relational trauma to provide practical insights for professionals working with individuals affected by intimate partner violence.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify personality traits associated with Cluster B personality disorders that may appear in certain intimate partner violence perpetrators.

  2. Describe how pathological relational dynamics influence trauma responses in survivors of intimate partner violence.

  3. Recognize survivor personality traits and resilience factors that support recovery and the ability to maintain separation from abusive partners.

  4. Explain the neurological and psychological factors that influence personality development and relational behavior in pathological relationships.

  5. Apply clinical strategies that support survivors in maintaining safety, recovery, and long-term freedom from abusive relationships.
